NAB PREVIEW: Telecast Fiber eases transmission challenge

Telecast Fiber heads to NAB with a number of new options for truck vendors and sports broadcasters looking for ways to solve fiber and triax connectivity issues.

Among the offerings is the G2 CopperHead, a camera-mounted transceiver that allows triax-based cameras send signals over fiber cabling. It provides a migration path for low-cost ENG cameras that are used for sports, says Richard Cerny, Telecast Fiber, president and CEO. The generic ENG CopperHead can be plugged on the back of the camera without the need for a triax or fiber back.

The system can also simultaneously do HD SDI output, three analog video channels, composite video, audio, intercoms, and data. It s a really powerful engine, says Cerny.

The company also introduced SCAMP, a SMPTE cable amplifier/repeater that is designed for SMPTE 311 hybrid cables. The optical repeater and power amplifier can be installed in the middle a cable run and can draw power from the SMPTE cable and repeat the signal. Equipped with in-line optical power meters, the SCAMP becomes an effective tool for monitoring and maintaining SMPTE fiber systems and infrastructures.

SCAMP can determine where the problems are in a cable and boost the signals in both directions, says Cerny. It extends the range of SMPTE cables.

Broadcasters looking to reclaim fiber capacity will want to check out Teleport-X, a Wavelength management CWDM multiplexer. The expandable teleport can now handle up to 16 bi-directional wavelengths. Using CWDM technology, each single-mode fiber can now support up to 40 Gbps. This supports as many as 16 high definition video signals or 128 analog video channels, plus any associated audio, in both directions using two single-mode fibers.

And for those looking for help with audio signal distribution Adder II BoothPak can handle up to 512 channels of audio on a fiber. It can handle analog and digital AES audio while converting between them and, with an integrated signal generator and analyzer plus facilities for data and intercom and optical redundancy eases complicated audio set-ups.

Lastly, new Viper II modules include the SG5070 for testing fiber and copper transmission paths and identifying signals in the field. The new generator is capable of producing four different video test patterns in seven HD formats and six SDI formats. Other features include the option for fiber optic ST connector outputs that enable direct-to-optical testing. Another new option is the 5269 SD/AES transmitter/receiver set that transports one SDI (270M) or DVB-ASI video signal and two independent AES audio signals on a single wavelength.
