VizRT, Big Screen deliver Rose Bowl graphics

During the Rose Bowl National Championship Game between the University of Texas and USC at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA earlier this year, a crowd of 94,000 spectators watched a display of 3D animated graphics on the stadium video board designed and created by Big Screen Network Productions, Inc. using a Vizrt Viz|Trio 3D graphics system.

Big Screen Network Productions, which has produced video board and stadium entertainment for the last 21 Super Bowls and 3 Olympic Games, purchased the Vizrt Viz|Trio on behalf of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, hosts of the popular annual New Year s parade and game. The Viz|Trio purchase was part of an initial capital investment in new equipment including a Thomson Grass Valley Kayak switcher, and a Sound and Video Creations Video Click Effects system to help upgrade the look and efficiency of the show. As a specialist in producing video board and stadium entertainment since 1983, Big Screen Network Productions has worked for the Tournament of Roses since 1997.

When the Tournament of Roses allocated money to upgrade the control room at the Rose Bowl, we felt strongly about incorporating an innovative, 3D look in our on-site graphics, said Kevin Kowta, director of operations for Big Screen Network Productions. The Viz|Trio s realtime animation and ability to incorporate realtime stats allows us to upgrade the look, flexibility and capabilities of our shows. It also puts the purchase for the Rose Bowl and its events at the forefront of video board production design since it s the first system of its kind ever installed in a stadium video board control room in the United States.

Using Vizrt s Viz|Artist, the companion 3D animation product for graphics design, as well as Adobe Illustrator and PhotoShop software, T.J. Nuckolls, director of creative design for BSN, created all of the 3D elements for the Viz|Trio graphics templates.
The work created on the Vizrt changed the way we approached our graphics package for the National Championship Game, says Nuckolls. It gave us more flexibility and allowed us to better incorporate our overall programming. We also see this improving both our look and our process for our upcoming UCLA football season.

A big part of Big Screen Network s mission for video board shows in stadiums, arenas, and world class events is to integrate the latest technologies and designs, says Paul Kalil, President and CEO of Big Screen Network. The Vizrt system gave us an opportunity to pioneer a new look on a stadium big screen in one of our most important shows of the year the Rose Bowl Game. It s all part of our continued effort to uncover the most creative and effective ways to present all of our productions.
