USC taps Daktronics for Galen Center

This summer the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles opens the doors of its brand new basketball arena, Galen Center, to the Trojan community. At the heart of this sophisticated arena will be a complete state-of-the-art video, scoring and message super system designed and manufactured by Daktronics.

“We are looking forward to the capability to ‘wow’ the visitors to the facility and to have a scoreboard that will last us many years,” says Stan Westfall, Project Manager of USC Capital Construction. “The Galen Center is a basketball and volleyball arena and the scoring systems for those sports are quite different. The advanced technology allows us to superimpose scores on the video displays rather than having fixed digits, which makes it easier for us to manage both sports.”

The basketball system will incorporate advanced light emitting diode (LED) technology with video and scoring features. The centerhung scoreboard is comprised of four ProStar VideoPlus displays with the capabilities to show live and recorded video, scores, statistics, colorful animation and vivid graphics. Each high resolution video display measures approximately 12 feet high by 21 feet wide with pixels (picture elements) on 10 millimeter spacing. The display uses red, green and blue (RGB) LED technology to present images and information with wide-angle visibility and incredible brightness.

Located on the sides of each of the four video displays will be eight full-color LED accent displays, adorning the scoreboard from top to bottom in strips approximately 6 inches wide.

Other components of the super system are fascia mounted displays. These four displays will use Daktronics ProAd technology for complete message flexibility. The Galen Center’s displays will measure approximately 2 feet high by 25 feet wide with pixels on 16 millimeter spacing. When not recognizing sponsors, ProAd displays can show game in progress information, team and player stats, full-color animation and cropped video clips to add entertainment value and raise the crowd’s enthusiasm level.

To keep fans, players and referees aware of game time, Daktronics will provide digital LED clocks. The integrated system includes Tuff Sport BB-2111 three-sided LED game/shot clocks and single-sided BB-2115 LED game/shot clocks.

The Trojans will expand Daktronics scoring and timing systems into their practice facility with three Tuff Sport BB-2107 LED basketball scoreboards. Tuff Sport scoreboards provide additional durability with an attractive design. Made with 25 percent more durable aluminum, they are designed to withstand unintentional blows from indoor sports balls.

The Galen Center will also use LED display technology at their ticket windows. The facility will include seven Galaxy displays that will present a variety information to customers.
