California State Fresno says yes to Daktronics

California State University in Fresno recently chose Daktronics to design and manufacture a unique scoring, advertising and messaging system for Bulldog Stadium, home of the Fresno State Bulldogs. The project has been spearheaded by California State University Fresno’s multimedia rights partner Learfield Communications (DBA Bulldog Sports Properties) and will coincide with the venue’s 25th anniversary.

The existing scoreboard in the north end of the stadium will be replaced with a unique design, incorporating a large main video display using Daktronics proven ProStar technology, along with five other digital displays, all utilizing popular full-color light emitting diode (LED) display technology.

“We chose Daktronics because of their reputation in the industry and their history of performance,” said Steve Sullivan, General Manager of Bulldog Sports Properties. “We’ve worked with Daktronics for several years, and know the reputation they have on a national level.”

“We are very excited this project is coming to fruition,” Sullivan added. “This addition will greatly enhance the game day experience for Bulldog fans, plus give us an opportunity to increase advertising revenue for the athletics department with a more sophisticated, high-end system. These boards will have a dramatic impact on the game day atmosphere.”

“Bringing state of the art electronics to Bulldog Stadium that adds to the fan experience is great,” said Pat Hill, Head Football Coach at California State University Fresno. “We have great fans, and this improvement makes the stadium a better venue for college football.”

The six electronic displays on the main scoreboard will be supported by a unique archway system that will also hold a printed ‘BULLDOG STADIUM’ sign and circular logo panel. When completed, the top of the structure will rise approximately 63 feet above grade and will span nearly 70 feet. The main ProStar video display, to be located in the center of the structure, will measure approximately 24 feet high by 32 feet wide. The additional digital displays will be located on the sides and below the main video display, and will have the capability to show scores, game time, time outs left, team and player statistics, scores of other Western Athletic Conference (WAC) football games and other events, sponsor messages, time and temperature, and nearly any other information to keep fans informed and entertained. The back of the scoreboard will recognize Bulldog athletic sponsors with printed advertising panels.

Also included in the $1.6 million project is a new video marquee to be installed at the corner of Cedar and Barstow Avenues, which will also help increase visibility for Bulldog athletics and other campus events, and will recognize corporate sponsors that help make the project a reality. The video display on the marquee will use the same technology as the video display on the football scoreboard, and will measure approximately 7’6″ high by 12’0″ wide. It will have the capability to show video clips as well as still graphics, animation and text messages in billions of colors. Below the marquee video display is a smaller full-color LED display that will be used for primarily for additional messaging and branding. The overall height of the marquee structure is 32 feet.

The project is being funded by revenue generated by new signage and advertising opportunities with these systems. Installation of the new football scoreboard is scheduled for completion by the end of September.
