ABC Sports: Rest In Peace…

Earlier today George Bodenheimer, ESPN president, announced that ESPN will become the overarching brand for all sports programming carried on the ABC Television Network beginning September 2 – the debut of ABC’s college football season.

“This will bring the strongest brand in sports media to The Walt Disney Company’s most expansive platform – the ABC Television Network – enhancing our relationship with fans and better serving all our business partners,” he said in a company wide memo.

“It also embraces the dynamic changes taking place in our industry. Sports has become an endless passion for millions, and fans have an abundance of choices to indulge those passions,” Bodenheimer continued. “Brands are increasingly meaningful in today’s environment, and thanks to all of you, in ESPN we are fortunate to have collectively created and nurtured the industry’s strongest.”

Bodenheimer lauded the contributions of ABC Sports to the industry. “Our company and the history of sports television are legend, and we will continue to embrace this legacy of innovation in everything we do,” he added. “We all owe a debt of gratitude to those who have been a part of it.”
