Oh Canada! CBC taps SSL for HD truck

By Andrew Lippe

CBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Company, has purchased its fourth C100 Series console from Solid State Logic. The console will be used in a new HD remote broadcast truck to broadcast Canadian sports including NHL games. They also installed A C100 series console in an entertainment production truck.

“From the moment I sat behind the C100, I knew I had found a console that was designed for live television broadcast,” said CBC engineer and now freelancer Howard Baggley. “It’s all the things you need as a live TV mixer. It’s a great desk.”

The custom C148/64 is a duplicate of an earlier installation of a C148/64 in CBC’s inaugural HD remote broadcast truck named HD Premier. CBC also recently installed a C140 for national news and a C264 in their Toronto HD entertainment production studio

The C100 series supports up to 128 input channels, and provides simultaneous 5.1, stereo and mono signal paths directly from source through to destination. A Master Channel may be fitted in each channel bay of the console, providing multi operator capability and hardware redundancy in case any panel is damaged.

Each channel has two definable buttons and two definable knobs with associated switches, each with a 4 character display. The Master Channel provides control of all routing and processing parameters through 27 alphanumeric displays, 34 bus displays, 37 knobs, and 86 switches; this knob-per-function access enables both fast operation and user confidence. The C100’s flexible architecture allows channels to route directly to the program outputs, and audio subgroups, as required.

“Throughout the development and introduction of the C100, we were confident that we were creating a console that met and exceeded the current and future needs of busy broadcast facilities,” says Steve Zaretsky, vice president, Broadcast Sales, Solid State Logic. In the U.S, E. W. Scripps Howard Company CBS, ABC, and Fox have made a similar commitment to SSL consoles. “The industry’s response validates our efforts, and we are thrilled that so many facilities have chosen to install multiple C Series consoles.”
