NFL Network calls on Nvision for Super Bowl XLII coverage

By Andrew Lippe

There isn’t any sporting event that features as much hype as the Super Bowl. And with the NFL Network (and NFL.com) planning to deliver every press conference and interview regarding Super Bowl XLII, exceeding 100 hours leading up to the game, it needed a new way to handle all the content. That’s one reason the network has decided to use three NVision routing and master control products: the NV5128-MC multi-channel master control; an NV915 router control; and an NV9640 router control panel that offers up to 30 re-legendable LCD buttons.

“The NVision controller creates a much smoother process for streaming video over the Internet,” says Gary L. Reed, NFL Films chief engineer.

The NFL Network will be streaming all this content in HD. “We installed fiber because all bets off with HD on coax cable,” adds Reed.

The NFL Network will kick off its broadcast coverage from Glendale, AZ, on Sunday, January 27. The NFL Network will broadcast from other venues including the NFL Experience, the NFL Convention Center (Phoenix, Arizona), and the hotels for the American Football Conference (AFC) and for the National Football Conference (NFC).

“We will broadcast six to seven hours a day except on Gameday [when we will stop streaming video],” says Reed. All video will be editing with Apple Final Cut Pro and Grass Valley HD cameras will be capture video.

The NVision master control switcher will be located in NEP’s Supershooter 14 truck that will handle transmission. The NVision master control switcher will transmit multiple feeds from the venues and will operate alongside a Calrec Alpha audio console, and EVS replay devices. Graphics will be created using Vizrt graphic systems.

“This will enable us to handle the audio and video through the same switcher and use only one operator, “says Reed. The switcher will also put the NFL Network branding logo on satellite news feeds. The Level 3/Vyvx network will send streams to Stamford, CT and to the NFL Films office in New Jersey.

The NFL Network, NFL.com, NFL Films and the Satellite News Service will send 10 crews to the University of Phoenix complex. Approximately 70 domestic broadcasters are also expected to be on site along with eight international broadcasting teams.
