Ultimate Fighting Championship Heads To UK

By Kevin Hilton

The Ultimate Fighting Championship, that most American of extreme sports, arrives on UK television tomorrow (January 19) with
Setanta Sports’ live coverage of UFC 80: Rapid Fire from the Metro
Radio Arena in Newcastle. The Setanta transmission is a re-broadcast of
UFC’s international feed.

This is the first of the UFC contests
in the UK that Setanta Sports 1 will be showing as part of an ongoing
deal securing its exclusive rights to show all the organisation’s top
UK and US fights, as well as associated programming, across Britain and
Ireland.

Under this agreement subscribers can watch at least
four live fights held in Britain during 2008 and 2009 and from July
they will be able to see live coverage of US bouts. This will not be on
a pay-per-view basis but is part of Setanta’s monthly 9.99
subscription package.

Marshall Zelaznik, president of UFC’s UK
Division, commented, ‘We are delighted to continue and expand our
relationship with Setanta Sports. In 2007, the UFC became a huge part
of the sports landscape in the UK and we are very excited to be able to
build on that in 2008 and beyond with Setanta Sports becoming the home
of all our UK-based fight nights and all UFC programming.’
