Omneon, Pro-Bel integrate automation, servers

Pro-Bel’s Morpheus automation and media management systems and Omneon’s MediaGrid active storage and Omneon media server products are now integrated, providing broadcasters an enterprise-wide storage and playout infrastructure under the control of a single management system, greatly improving workflow and overall efficiency.

At the core of the solution is Omneon MediaGrid active storage, providing the platform for reliable central storage and easily scaling in manageable increments of capacity, bandwidth, and media-processing power. Through the use of Omneon APIs, the Pro-Bel Morpheus systems can coherently control the flow of content within an operation — from managing ingest via the Omneon Spectrum or MediaDeck servers, to moving content to and from central storage on the MediaGrid, to controlling playout to air. Because the solution is completely scalable, it is suitable for both local and regional broadcasters, as well as the largest international multichannel media operations.

“The Morpheus family of automation and media management products was designed to eliminate as much manual intervention as possible, with the philosophy that once content has entered the broadcast facility, the operation should be able to run itself,” says Gordon Hadley, partner manager for Pro-Bel. “With its media-aware storage, the Omneon MediaGrid helps turn that philosophy into reality.”

At Turner Entertainment Networks International, London, the combined system is in full operation. Omneon Spectrum servers, under control of the Pro-Bel Morpheus system, manage content flow and playout for 20 channels. The Omneon MediaGrid provides central online storage, at any time holding an inventory of several months of content so that on-air Spectrum servers can be populated with material as needed. The Morpheus media management suite manages the movement of material from and to the MediaGrid, assuring that the required material is available on the Spectrum servers.

“The recent growth of distribution channels and digital content requires that broadcast operations implement intelligent solutions for storage and management of content as it moves through a facility,” says Geoff Stedman, vice president of worldwide marketing for Omneon. “MediaGrid provides facilities with immediate access to a vast pool of centralized content, and Pro-Bel’s Morpheus gives them the ability to move and track those materials with the assurance that they will be available when needed.”
