NHL All-Star Game makes use of Fletcher Slo-Mo, Turner Sports TS1 truck

By Andrew Lippe

NHL fans will be privy to goal replays like never before as the Versus Network will use a Super Slo Mo camera for coverage of the NHL All Star Game this Sunday in Atlanta, GA.

Fletcher Chicago is providing a NAC digital high-speed camera to the Versus Network for the game. Innovative camera views are not new to the Versus Network as last year Fletcher supplied them with the Rail Cam.

“We opted away from the Rail Cam,” says Michael Baker coordinating producer, Versus Network. “Super Slo Mo will provide the viewer with mind-boggling replays.”

The Versus Network will broadcast out of Turner Studios TS1 truck. The truck is equipped with a Grass Valley HD Kalypso production switcher, Pinnacle graphics, EVS replays, a Yamaha audio board and Ikegami HD cameras with Canon lenses.

“The truck is great in terms of room and space,” says Baker.

The Super Slo Mo camera captures action at 90 frames per second and will benefit from the bright lighting conditions of a hockey game (the ice is a nice light reflecting source) to give extra clarity to images. “You will be able to read Gary Bettman’s name on puck,” adds Baker.

The high-speed camera was also used during the NBA All Star Game and during this year’s Home Run Derby in San Francisco where the camera isolated on a player’s home run swing. “It will show how hard players like Zdeno Chara can shoot. The replays should be seen on sports highlight shows, they are that dramatic,” says Baker.

Lectrosonics wireless microphones are also being added to telecast. Dallas Stars goalie Marty Turco wore a wireless microphone during the third period of last year’s contest. St. Louis Blues goalie Manny Legace and New York Islanders Goalie Rick DiPietro will wear mics during this year’s All Star weekend.
