ESPN to launch HD Service in Australia

By Andrew Lippe

ESPN HD is going down under later this year. ESPN HD Australia will be the
first ESPN-branded high definition service outside the United States and will be available on FOXTEL in
Australia,
offering exclusive ESPN content.
“When it comes to our product nothing is more compelling
than an HD presentation,” says Bill Lamb, vice president, ESPN Systems
Engineering and Technology Support.

ESPN HD Australia will offer an array of content including
SportsCenter Australia
and Pardon the Interruption Australia. All HD content will be broadcast in
720p. “720p is standard for ESPN production,” says Lamb. As the year goes on,
the network will continue to expand its HD content. “ESPN HD Australia will be transmitted using undersea fiber
optic cable,” says Emory Strilkauskas, associate director, Media
Transmission & Special Projects. The fiber transmission path provides the
ability to send and receive feeds from the Australian region, as well as the
future opportunity to provide additional regional program services. All feeds
will pass through ESPN’s master control system located in Bristol.
