IOC Member to Speak at Sport and Technology: The Conference 2008

Sport and Technology: The Conference 2008, in association with BT Media and Broadcast, will feature a presentation by IOC member Patrick Baumann, Secretary-General of FIBA (the International Basketball Federation). Baumann will join the ‘Maximising Digital Sports Rights: Show Me the Money’ panel discussion at the must-attend event on 13 June 2008 at BT Centre in London.

Elected a member of the IOC in July 2007, Baumann is a member of the IOC Evaluation Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games and a member of the IOC Coordination Committee for the 2012 Olympic Games.

He will join fellow panellists Jon Mobbs, Head of Strategy, BT Media and Broadcast; Leo Mindel, Director, SOTIC; Oliver Slipper, Joint CEO, Perform; and Paul Wright, Head of Business Development, Sky Media, to discuss issues such as whether sports properties should make digital content free in order to grow a community/fanbase versus monetising it through selling rights fees/subscriptions/PPV.

With social networking sites fuelling a perception that web content should not be charged for, the panel will consider how rights owners can protect their online assets if they do want to sell them, and how they can value them in the first place. At the end of the discussion, moderated by Tony Singh, Manager, Spectrum Value Partners, the audience will be asked to vote on the question: “Should rights owners give their new media rights away free?”

Now in its fourth year, Sport and Technology: The Conference 2008 is bringing together its usual strong array of leading sports properties and technology/digital solutions providers to discuss what’s hot and what’s not in the fast-paced world of technology and sport.

The illuminating panel discussions will cover issues that are vital to companies involved in sport, highlighting future business opportunities. As well as the panel on ‘Maximising Digital Sports Rights’, Sport and Technology: The Conference 2008 will feature sessions on ‘Planning for a Digital Olympics’ and ‘Creating Opportunities for Sponsors through Digital Technology’.

In addition to three compelling keynote addresses by prolific industry leaders, this year, Sport and Technology: The Conference will introduce a new session allowing technology-providers to showcase their contributions to sport, and sports properties to illustrate how technology has helped to grow their fanbases using specific case studies.

Confirmed speakers already include representatives from Atos Origin – Olympics & Major Events, the BBC, BT, FIBA, London 2012, Liverpool FC, Orange, Perform, Powerboat P1, Rugby Football League, Sky, Sochi 2014, SOTIC, Spectrum Value Partners, Sponsorship Consulting, Sports Impact and Virtual Spectator.
