FiberPlex intros LightViper Shadow fiber optic transport system

A new combined media fiber optic transport system, known as LightViper Shadow, is now available from FiberPlex. The Shadow is designed for live sound and broadcast production, fixed media installations and remote recording applications and the 2.5-GHz system will handle a variety of media, including audio, intercom, Ethernet, RS422/232/485 control, composite video (EIA-250C) and TTL data.

With optional component modules, DMX lighting control, MIDI, CANBUS and other control data can also be handled. The Shadow’s modular components may be used independently or in combination to achieve a virtually unlimited variety of system designs for transporting various media data over a fiber optic network (up to its maximum 2.5-GHz bandwidth with a total of 256 bi-directional audio channels at speeds up to 192kHz).

The components include an MP16 audio module and an STP64 combined media system. The MP16 is a 16-channel, 19-inch 2U rack-mounted, bi-directional audio matrix module that includes 16 remotely-controllable mic preamplifiers; The STP64 is a 19-inch 8U rack-mounted system that incorporates 64 channels of bi-directional matrixed audio with 64 remotely-controllable mic preamplifiers; an 8-channel intercom (RTS, Clearcom and 2 & 4-wire compatible); two (2) independent channels of 10/100 Ethernet with 1 GHz switches; one (1) channel of bi-directional distributed EIA-250C composite video; eight (8) “CCI” (configurable communication interface) ports for RS422, 232 or 485 data; and four (4) TTL data ports. The system offers the ability to select simple preset system configurations controlled from the front panel – without any need for a computer.

When users need more extensive system control, they can use the Shadow’s GUI software running on a laptop computer (PC or Mac OS) via a “SPSC” Ethernet link. The system includes three 2.5-GHz bandwidth master multiplexers. All optics are SFP “Small Form (Factor) Pluggable” and can be installed without opening the chassis. A 3/16-inch machined aluminum front panel and a rugged electronics chassis cooled by seven temperature-controlled, ultra-quiet fans is built to withstand the rigors of location production.

Both the MP16 and the STP64 have the option of internal redundant power supplies (AC and DC available). A standalone hot-swappable, dual-redundant 500-watt power supply (PRC500) is also available. The PRC500 can power 16 individual modules, 2 STP64’s or 1 STP64 and an additional 8 modules.

Additionally, the STP64 Shadow features redundant fiber using “Star” topology; system gain leveling, permitting individual operators to remain unaffected by gain changes at individual locations; and MRT “multi-port routing technology” that allows any input in the system to be assigned to any or all outputs. The STP64M is a MADI version of the STP64 that includes MADI inputs/outputs and no mic preamplifiers.

The suggested Professional Audio user price for the MP16 is $8,500.00 and the STP64 is $30,000.00. Availability on the MP16 and the STP64 will be third quarter, 2008.
