Microsoft Silverlight makes Olympic gains

By Andrew Lippe

Microsoft took to the
stage at Streaming Media East to discuss how its Silverlight video player
continues to be used across the sports spectrum. Microsoft Silverlight 2
is currently in Beta and is athe cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in that
delivers video content over the Internet with interactive applications will be
used by NBC Olympics. The network will stream 2,200 hours of Beijing Olympics
content online and between 18 to 20 streams will be pumped to the site at once.
And while Adobe Flash remains the leader in video players Silverlight is
gaining ground with its innovative features that include adaptable
streaming.

“Developers that are
building with Silverlight can choose any programming language they want,” says
Jit Ghosh, Microsoft architect. “Silverlight 1 was focused on delivering rich
media video streaming services. Sliverlight 2 is about exploding video content
and building really rich media applications.”

According to Ghosh,
Silverlight can be optimized for different bandwidths. “Adaptive streaming
determines how much video can go on a pipe at a time,” adds Ghosh. He says the
adaptable streaming capability for Silverlight 2 makes it the ideal choice for
delivering video from Beijing
for NBC Olympics.
