NBCSports.com, USGA team with AirPlay.com for U.S. Open Live Challenge

NBCSports.com and the USGA will deliver an interactive game experience for the 2008 U.S. Open via AirPlay.com. With U.S. Open Live Challenge, golf fans compete live while watching their favorite competitors throughout the June 12 – 15 broadcasts from Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. “U.S. Open fans have already proven to be highly engaged across multiple mediums during the Championship,” said Alex Withers, Director of New Media at the USGA. “Partnering with NBCSports.com and AirPlay for a live interactive experience now gives golf fans a real stake in the action during this marquee championship.”

While the pros compete for the seven million dollar purse, avid fans play along on the Web, predicting the action live for a chance to win an all expenses paid trip to the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black. Players can predict the scores of their most-watched players, calling out live course action such as whether a player will sink a putt on the third hole or bogey on the next par 4. It happens in real time during the broadcast with immediate leaderboard updates, golf trivia questions, player-to-player chat and up-to-the-second opinion polls.

By combining today’s multi-player TV technology with television viewers’ passion for the ultimate golf championship, the USGA, NBCSports.com and AirPlay take the experience of the game and its fans to new heights with U.S. Open Live Challenge.

“The U.S. Open is more than a premier golf championship, it’s a golf institution,” explained AirPlay Chairman and CEO Morgan Guenther. “And for the first time this year, legions of Open fans can tee it up live with the pros and shoot for the moon.”

AirPlay adds the new U.S. Open Live Challenge to an existing mix of unique sporting events and game show offerings that include NFL Call-the-Play Football, NBA Realtime Fantasy, Deal or No Deal and Jeopardy!. Every AirPlay game lets viewers compete in real time against a community of fans via their mobile devices or the Web for the ultimate television viewing experience.
