DNF Controls Roars Into Clemson for scoreboard replay

By Andrew Lippe

Clemson University
, the home of the Clemson Tigers
has been utilizing a portable replay controller from DNF Controls to deliver
instant replay on their standard definition video boards. DNF Controls
ST-304-DSR1K-T slow-motion controller connects to two Sony DSR-DR1000 hard disk
drives that allow the operators to mark cue points during live action and
allows them to view play back video instantly even as live recording
continues.

“We do not have space for
a control room nor do we have wiring from all our venues,” says Rick Bagby,
Clemson University Athletics, director of athletic video services. “We chose
DNF portable controller because it worked well with what we want to do and it
was within our budget.”

Bagby built a portable
production system with one monitor for live action video and a second for cued
material. The DNF slow-motion controller supports two record and two playback
channels, and includes a T-bar for single keystroke cue marking up to 100 cue
points. The controller is primarily used for men’s and women’s soccer, baseball
and basketball games.

Marking cue points was a
key feature as it enables Clemson to not miss any live action recording. The
school previously used a tape-based system and it required operators to
“park” on a replay and suspend live recording until after playout.
The ST-304 controller did not interrupt the recording process. “DNF was a good
purchase for us and it has made our in game production a lot more valuable to
the people watching because we are getting in more replays,” adds Bagby.

Right now all live video
feeds are captured with Panasonic P2 cameras. Bagby said that eventually he
would like to do a cost effective HD shoot with three to four cameras and replay.
“We would like to archive all replays in HD if we can,” adds Bagby. “What we
would like to have is a replay solution where as we are marking it we could go
back and make a melt tape of those marks. Currently what we have to do is bring
the P2 cards back to our Avid’s and make a melt that way after the game.”
