EURO Final Attracts Record 1 Million Viewers on TSN

TSN’s live
coverage of yesterday afternoon’s UEFA EURO 2008 final featuring Germany vs. Spain attracted a national average
audience of 1.01 million viewers, making it the most watched EURO game ever on
TSN. Audience levels peaked at 1.13 million viewers from 4 p.m. to 4:30
p.m. ET towards the end of the game as Spain
defeated Germany
1-0 to win its first European Championship in 44 years.
An
additional 86,000 viewers tuned in to a prime time encore of the final on TSN,
while 318,000 viewers watched the final live on RDS, bringing the total average
minute audience to 1.42 million viewers.
TSN and
Rogers Sportsnet partnered to provide live coverage of all 31 EURO 2008 games,
achieving a combined average audience of 309,000 viewers per game, marking a 7%
increase over the previous high (288,000 viewers in 2004 on TSN).
Sportsnet’s
most-watched game of the tournament was the quarter-final featuring Spain vs. Italy (June 22), which drew 816,000
viewers.
This
year’s tournament marked the first time in Canada that all 31 games were
televised live and in High Definition. TSN has televised the UEFA
European Championship on five previous occasions – 1988 from Germany, 1992 from Sweden,
1996 from England, 2000 from
Belgium and the Netherlands, and 2004 from Portugal.
