Eurosport’s recently launched HD service went on air on Sky in the UK
and Republic of Ireland today (July 15), expanding the broadcaster’s
high definition reach across Europe. The new channel joins the British
Eurosport and Eurosport 2 channels already carried by Sky and will give
subscribers in Britain and Ireland the opportunity to see the last
stage of the Tour de France and the whole of the Beijing Olympics in HD.

Jean-Thierry
Augustin, general manager of distribution and development for the
Eurosport Group, says, “Sport, especially live, is spectacular in
high definition. It transforms the viewing experience for sports fans
and, as the leading sports TV channel in Europe, it was a natural move
for Eurosport to enrich its TV offering with HD. Together with
Eurosport and Eurosport 2, Eurosport in HD guarantees all Sky
subscribers in the UK and Ireland truly enhanced channel content.”

The
move into the UK and Ireland follows the start of Eurosport HD in May,
when the French Open was simulcast from Roland Garros to selected
countries around Europe. So far 30 carriers in 17 countries are taking
Eurosport, with more to be confirmed in the near future.
