YouTube Adding 1080p Video Support

The Mac Observer reports that YouTube is bumping up its maximum HD video resolution from 720p to 1080p. Support for 1080p videos is coming next, according to a Thursday post on the YouTube blog.

“We’re excited to say that support for watching 1080p HD videos in full resolution is on its way. Starting next week, YouTube’s HD mode will add support for viewing videos in 720p or 1080p, depending on the resolution of the original source, up from our maximum output of 720p today,” said YouTube Software Engineer Billy Biggs.

YouTube is in the process of re-encoding 1080p that have been already uploaded so they can be viewed at full resolution once the upgrade is completed.
