CES 2010: Harris Assists in Mobile DTV Demonstrations

Harris Broadcast Communications will support several live ATSC Mobile DTV demonstrations designed to exhibit the viability of digital mobile broadcasting to consumers and receiver manufacturers at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Harris will support over-the-air broadcasts for Las Vegas digital TV stations KLAS-DT (CBS affiliate) and KVMY (MyNetworkTV affiliate) at the Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC) Pavilion and at the stands of various receiver manufacturers. Harris will integrate its MPH ATSC Mobile DTV platform with each broadcaster’s main transmitter to deliver the ATSC Mobile DTV streams.

“Our objectives at CES are to support the broadcast industry through real-world, over-the-air ATSC Mobile DTV demonstrations and further the progress of receiver availability for consumers,” says Jay Adrick, VP of broadcast technology for Harris. “The official adoption of the ATSC Mobile DTV Standard means that consumers can begin receiving live television and multimedia broadcasts on a variety of wireless receiving devices as broadcasts and receivers become available.”

Harris will also transmit eight ATSC Mobile DTV program streams of local and national content on local Channel 56.  The DiSH Network, which owns Channel 56 in the Las Vegas market, has volunteered its frequency for the demonstration.  Harris will provide one of its Maxiva UAX air-cooled UHF transmitters and its MPH platform to establish a complete, over-the-air transmission system.
