Networks Face Reailty with 3D TV Plans

Following the all-3D-all-the-time 2010 Consumer Electronics Show, networks must now face the cold reality of exactly what to do now when it comes to 3D TV. Several networks have already announced plans for 3D TV, including ESPN, DirecTV, and Discovery, but content for these channels is still far from complete.

Broadcasting & Cable
reports that CBS is in the early stages of developing its 3D plans, but concerns remain. CBS still isn’t sure what 3D format it will deliver. The choices are full resolution to each eye, which would require more bandwidth; or frame-compatible 3D, which uses spatial compression to squeeze 3D within standard HD capacity by putting the left- and right-eye images either side by side or one on top of the other.
