MLS, Players Extend Bargaining Deadline

Major League Soccer and its players have at least temporarily avoided a work stoppage, agreeing to extend the deadline for a new labor contract to Feb. 12.

The two sides have been bargaining for months and the current five-year contract expires on Sunday. USA Today reports that after failing to come to an agreement following negotiations on Tuesday and Wednesday, players had feared that management might lock them out following the contract’s expiration on Sunday.

The primary points of contention revolve around the players’ desire to increase the average salary, have more guaranteed money in contracts, and modify the MLS’s single-entity structure, in which players sign with the league rather than individual teams.
