South Africa May Be Low on Power for World Cup

Electrical power shortages and blackouts around South Africa have raised some serious concerns about then nation’s ability to handle the power requirements of the upcoming FIFA World Cup in June and July.

According to The New York Times, officials at FIFA expressed confidence that the problems would not have an impact on the games. FIFA said all the stadiums would have backup power to ensure smooth operations during the tournament.

Eskom, the country’s power utility, has expressed confidence that it will be able to handle the additional strains on its system even with an estimated 350,000 visitors expected to attend the World Cup and new construction of stadiums and other structures to support the games added to the national grid.
