Glensound Plays Key Role for International Olympic Commentary

Winter sports are big in Italy, which explains why national broadcaster RAI will have its own production truck, complete with a Glensound digital commentary system, on-site for the Vancouver Olympics. RAI was among the first broadcasters to take delivery of the GDC-6432 after it was launched a year ago, with units also going to several Italian OB operators, UK sports-TV supplier deltatre, and SRG SSR of Switzerland.

The Swiss national TV service worked with Glensound during development of the digital commentary system and has now taken delivery of 16 units. These are being used by SRG SSR to cover a variety of sports, including Alpine and Nordic skiing, cycling, athletics, rowing, tennis, football, volleyball, and golf.

The GDC-6432 comprises two separate parts, the commentators’ box with faders and headphone feeds, and an overall engineering controller, which can be located in an OB van or production gallery. The systems being used by SRG SSR have customised dCU3 commentary units, featuring an additional three-port Ethernet switch that allows commentators to plug their laptops into the system.

“Glensound has been very flexible in integrating further features for our needs,” says Ernst Camenzind, assistant head of technical operations for SRG SSR. “The similar user interfaces to the widely used Glensound analogue commentary systems help international commentators to be immediately familiar with the new system.”
