At NAB, Panasonic To Offer 2D Innovations as Well as 3D

Although about half of Panasonic’s Central Hall NAB booth will be dedicated to 3D, innovations in 2D systems, products, and camera formats will fill the other half. At this year’s NAB Show, the company will release several products designed to make its established 2D workflow more affordable and versatile: a single-slot P2 memory-card drive, a portable-media storage unit, and an integrated pan-tilt-zoom camera.

To help producers take a smaller, less expensive memory-card drive on the road, Panasonic’s AJ-PDC2 will be available in April. The single-slot P2 solid-state memory-card drive supports all P2 card sizes, P2 formats, and frame rates in HD and SD, so storage capacity and compatibility are not an issue. The PCD2 comes with two USB cables and requires no separate power supply for file transfers.

“This is a way to expand the versatility and make the workflow a little bit more effective,” says Joseph Facchini, VP of sales and product management for Panasonic. “It’s a little bit less expensive and a lot more versatile.”

The PCD2 will be priced at $350.

Also designed to expand the effectiveness of Panasonic’s workflow is the AG-MSU10 P2 media storage unit, a portable workflow tool that enables users to transfer P2 content to a removable solid-state drive. The two-slot unit accommodates one P2 card slot and a 2.5-in. SATA solid-state drive. With USB and eSATA connectors, the drive can be connected to any PC or Mac and features a 3.2-in. LCD screen.

The AG-MSU10 will be available in October at a suggested price of $2,500.

Also on display at NAB will be Panasonic’s first integrated pan-tilt-zoom camera, the AW-HE50. Two versions will become available this summer: the AW-HE50H with an HDMI output, the AW-HE50S with an HD/SDI output and gunlock.

The HE50 is part of Panasonic’s first complete IP and serial-control–capable system, the 50 Series. Up to 100 HE50 cameras in remote locations can be operated by a new remote camera controller, the AW-RP50. The camera has a full HD MOS sensor (effective resolution 1920×1080) and a ⅓-in. imager and is ideal for telepresence applications, according to Facchini.
