NAB Preview: Wohler Chief To Speak at Broadcast Engineering Conference

Wohler Technologies President and CEO Carl J. Dempsey will be a speaker for the Broadcast Engineering Conference (BEC) “IEEE-BTS Tutorial: Audio Technology for Television,” at the 2010 NAB Show. Scheduled for 2 p.m. on Monday, April 12 in room S228 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Dempsey’s presentation is titled Establishing Convenient Loudness Monitoring and Control Within Existing Broadcast Workflows.

“The noise over loudness has grown to a fever pitch in the United States with the introduction of bill H.R. 1084, Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation, or CALM, which would direct FCC regulation of audio volume in television advertising,” says Dempsey. “In my presentation, I’ll provide a quick overview of the bill’s ramifications and explore cost-effective strategies for instituting convenient, highly automated loudness control and monitoring across the broadcast plant.”

In examining today’s loudness issues, he will discuss options for integrating loudness control and monitoring with minimal impact on existing operations, whether staffed or unattended, and how new adaptive control algorithms are making it easier than ever to comply with both internal and federally mandated loudness standards.

Wohler will also roll out the latest in its most popular product lines at NAB.

The new AMP2-16V Series 16-channel audio/video monitor is a dual 4.3-in. OLED version of the company’s acclaimed AMP2-16 Series modular audio monitor. The addition of dedicated video monitoring and the original’s recently added Free Mix and Dolby Zoom functions make the AMP2-16V one of the most flexible and comprehensive 3G/HD/SD-SDI audio/video monitors available. Dolby Zoom switches between the standard overview of monitored channels and monitoring of the decoded channels of an available Dolby stream without entering any menus. The full trim, pan, and routing controls of the Free Mix feature reduce dependence on mixing consoles.

Also on display will be Wohler’s Closed Caption Video Monitor Adaptor (CD-1), which decodes and renders closed-caption subtitles for any video monitor to display, allowing the operator to confirm the presence and accuracy of critical video and caption data using existing or low-cost monitors that lack caption-display capability. This small externally powered unit translates an HD/SD-SDI multi-rate input containing closed-captioning signaling into a burned-in HD/SD-SDI or DVI signal with open captions added to the picture.

Wohler will also introduce a new software graphical user interface (GUI) for the company’s HDCC captioning card.
