Fast Forward Video Offers Replay for Under $5K

College professionals looking for a low-cost replay solution at NAB should head to Fast Forward Video’s booth. The company is showing its Micron HD digital video recorder with the tagline “Sports replay for under $5k.”

“With the Micron HD, you can replay HD-SDI footage for under $5,000,” says Director of Marketing Nicole Hollinger. “And you can pair a really inexpensive controller with it and have your cue points and everything ready to go.”

Micron HD, which is already in use in the college space, uses the JPEG 2000 codec for SD/HD-SDI recording in a 1RU unit. The unit offers up to five hours of record time and uses removable 2.5-in. drives and incorporates a USB. At less than $5,000, Micron HD offers the lowest price per channel in the broadcast industry.

FFV is also showing a prototype that is so new it does not yet have a name. The camera-mountable recorder/player will allow users to select the codec they want to use.

“So if you have somebody that has something that’s 100 Mbps and wants to use it with an Avid, then they’ll purchase that firmware, upload, and be able to use it,” Hollinger says. “It’s the first of its kind.”

That prototype is expected to be available in fourth quarter 2010.
