Burst-ing Into Baseball, Waiting on 3D

At the NAB show, systems integrator Burst is proud to discuss a pair of POV camera installs in MLB stadiums, but the company is using this show as an educational opportunity to learn about 3D before diving into the new dimension.

“I want to learn a little bit more about 3D,” says Don Rooney, VP of engineering for Burst. “I think that’s going to affect stadium design and camera placement. I don’t see it extending into the broadcast world right now; the 3D ramp-up is going to be slow for a while, and then, hopefully, it will take off.”

In the meantime, Burst is busy with baseball, installing POV cameras for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks. A single-camera install at Colorado’s Coors Field put a Canon BU-45H POV camera in the high-home position, using a Telemetrics camera-control system and Telecast Fiber extensions.

For the Diamondbacks, Burst installed four POV cameras, primarily for coaching purposes. One was placed on each dugout, looking back at the left- and right-handed batters, one in the high-home position, and one in an extended third-base position. Sony cameras and control systems were used in Arizona, along with CSI fiber and data extenders.

“Sports-wise, that’s it right now,” Rooney says. “It’s been a bit slower than last year. There was a rush on certain stadiums, especially in the big markets, and we saw a little bit from the college and minor-league side, then we hit a plateau. I expect we’ll see another round of stadiums when the economy gets better.”

Until then, plenty of clients are looking to install 3-GB infrastructure, “just to be ready, so that something can get dropped in down the road,” Rooney says.
