Sony VP and CBS News Vet Steve Jacobs Named President of Ubiquity Broadcasting

Steve Jacobs, most recently Sony Electronics, VP of Broadband Strategy and Alliances, and a CBS News veteran, is bringing his wealth of experience and success in broadcasting, digital technologies, strategic alliances and business development to a new role as president of Ubiquity Broadcasting Corp.

Ubiquity founder/Chairman/CEO Chris Carmichael says, “Steve brings us a plethora of knowledge and professionalism. He brings a broadcast background and a technology background. And he can execute, implement, and monetize.”

Ubiquity Broadcasting is a next-generation company, creating the world’s first ubiquitous network, where content distribution is platform- and screen-independent. With more that 60 worldwide patents and patents pending, Ubiquity is accelerating the ultimate convergence of media: mobile, internet, and television. In addition to its technology developments, Ubiquity also produces and distributes video coverage for the upcoming “Sponsor Me” series of Action Sports events. The privately held company is based in San Juan Capistrano, CA.

Jacobs defines Ubiquity as “really a hybrid. It’s a technology company. It’s a media company, and it’s a licensing — and relatively soon — an application company. Ubiquity represents a fusion of content, technology, and commerce. Everything I’ve done in my previous professional lives has prepared me for this job.”

Most recently, Jacobs served as VP of Broadband Strategy and Alliances at Sony Electronics, where he was responsible for the company’s relationships with myriad media companies worldwide. He was also integrally involved with Sony’s 3D development. Previously, at Sony Corp. of America (SCA), he played a critical role in negotiating an industry-leading Open Cable agreement between Sony, the major multiple system operators, and CableLabs. As SVP of Sony’s Broadcast and Professional Systems Division (BPSD), he led the company’s content-creation business and was at the forefront of Sony’s transition from a traditional analog, hardware-based business to its current industry-leading position as a digital, application-based marketing and sales organizations.

Jacobs’ tenure at Sony followed an equally impressive career in broadcast journalism. For more than 15 years, he worked at CBS News in a variety of roles, including senior producer for the CBS Evening News With Dan Rather and senior producer, then executive producer for CBS News Special Events. Following the 1996 presidential elections, Jacobs was instrumental in creating CBS.com, serving as executive producer for news.

“Steve makes technology easy to understand,” says John Scarcella, president, Broadcast and Business Solutions Co., Sony Electronics. “His ability to focus on the customer and clearly communicate, in simple terms, the innovative approach that Ubiquity is taking with respect to its ‘anytime, anywhere’ platform, will surely aid in establishing Ubiquity’s position. Steve is uniquely qualified to lead Ubiquity Broadcasting as it redefines content creation and distribution in the digital age.”

“The best thing about Steve is that his background is a complement to ours,” says Connie Jordan, Ubiquity VP, Intellectual Property. “With his breadth of experience, this is a perfect fit for Ubiquity as we move forward. You have to grow, and you need the right people to do that. That’s Steve in a nutshell.” She adds, “Steve’s an ultra-smart guy.”

Jacobs has received numerous awards, including a News Emmy for an unprecedented ABC series on the Soviet Union. He has also been honored by the Broadcast Design Association and Women in Radio and Television. With his colleagues at CBS News, he received the George Polk Award for international reporting for coverage of the Democracy Spring and Tienanmen Square uprising. He often speaks at industry conferences and events, addressing the applications of technology to editorial and business issues.
