Qualcomm Stadium Ordered to Upgrade Safety Measures Following Employee Death

A report by California safety investigators says that at least 13 areas of San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium are unsafe and in need of safety upgrades. The report comes six months after a San Diego Chargers employee fell to his death from the stadium’s press box before a game in October.

According to the report issued by Cal/OSHA, the viewing areas in question must be equipped with protective barriers. The Chargers and the city of San Diego have 30 to determine how to conduct the repairs and how to pay for them.

Chargers game-day employee Walt Daniels, 66, was delivering programs in the press box before an Oct. 19 game against the Denver Broncos when the accident occurred. Daniels stumbled on stairs, fell down the stairwell, hit a chair, slid off a table through an opening in the glass, and fell more than 20 feet to the seats below. He died at local hospital the next day.
