BSkyB Selects Quantel To Provide Core Tech for New Tapeless Facility

UK satellite broadcaster BSkyB is preparing to move to full tapeless production by August 2011, with its new Harlequin 1 broadcast centre in west London designed to work with file-based material. In preparation for this the company has bought a Quantel sQ server system to form the basis of an integrated production chain for Sky Sports News.
The installation involves seven multi-resolution sQ servers offering a total of 1500 hours of storage. Attached to these are 84 sQ Cut desktop editors for journalists, three sQ Edit Plus editing systems for more involved cutting of longer form productions and two Final Cut Pro workstations.
The sQ system was selected after what is described as “extensive evaluation” by Darren Long, head of operations at Sky Sports. “With its requirement for second-by-second updates as multiple, simultaneous sports events unfold, sports news presents the ultimate challenge for journalists and editors – and the systems they use,” says Long. “We chose the Quantel sQ because it is the fastest and most efficient system for adding real production value to rapidly developing stories.”
