Venue News & Notes: Quebec City Studies New NHL Arena

Before making any commitment, the Quebec government wants to know if a new arena in Quebec City would be profitable with or without an NHL team. Professional-services firm Ernst & Young has been hired to put together a business plan for a projected $400 million, 18,000-seat complex, which would be used as a concert venue and hockey arena. The city wants to lure back a professional hockey team to replace the Nordiques, which moved out in 1995, but, to do so, it needs a new arena to replace its aging Coliseé. Last fall, Mayor Régis Labeaume unveiled plans to build a modern NHL-size building to be mostly funded by the federal and provincial governments…

…Edmontonians gathered at the Art Gallery of Alberta this week as the Katz Group presented to the public its vision for a downtown arena development. The Katz Group started its public open house to allow Edmontonians to ask questions about the proposed project. “I think it’s fantastic and it’s going to be very nice for Edmonton,” said Johanna Giemza, who attended this week’s meeting. Katz Group EVP Bob Black says the meeting is a great opportunity for the people of Edmonton to learn more about the Edmonton arena district…

…Santa Clara, CA’s June 8 vote on a proposed $937 million stadium for the San Francisco 49ers is all about the money. Supporters of the plan for the 68,000-seat stadium, backed with more than $1.1 million from the team, talk excitedly about the $249 million the facility will pump into the local economy, the $26 million that will go to local schools, and the millions that will flow into city coffers, all for only $79 million in city costs. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Pat Kolstad, a former councilman. “We see no downside.”
