Duncan Cable Signs on as First Cable Provider to Deliver EchoStar’s ViP-TV

EchoStar Satellite Services (a subsidiary of EchoStar Corp.), has announced a deal to deliver its ViP-TV service to Duncan Cable TV in Vermont, marking the first cable company to utilize EchoStar’s IP-encapsulated video delivery system. With a ViP-TV-connected headend, Duncan Cable will be able to deliver more than 45 HD TV channels.

Duncan Cable provides video services to more than 2,800 residents and businesses in Southern Vermont and sought a platform that would enable it to offer competitive HD video services using its existing IP network. Several small cable operators are looking to expand their channels via IP technology; cable systems constrained on bandwidth can take an IP service like ViP-TV, which is interoperable with a number of DOCSIS-encapsulating technologies, to enable them to add channels without heavy investment or capacity expansion.

“ViP-TV’s IP-encapsulated, high quality HD channels easily integrated with our IPTV SDV solution, allowing us to expand our range of programming,” says Cliff Duncan, owner of Duncan Cable TV. “It cost-effectively fulfills our need for both HD and IPTV, giving us a competitive edge in the marketplace.”

EchoStar’s ViP-TV solution provides secure delivery of more than 250 popular, broadcast-quality TV and music channels in H.264 MPEG-4 format.

“EchoStar’s experience and skill sets provide a unique opportunity for cable operators to upgrade services while minimizing the costly investment in HDTV,” says Vern Smith, SVP at EchoStar and general manager of ViP-TV. “Deploying with ViP-TV reduces the time to market and risks while allowing operators like Duncan to focus on customer service.”
