Trio Video Taps Calrec Omega Console for Newest HD Truck

Trio Video will deploy Calrec Audio’s Omega audio console with Bluefin high-density signal processing in its newest outside broadcast truck, Tempo. The fourth HD truck in Trio’s fleet and the fourth to carry Calrec, Tempo is a 48-foot trailer with an expanding side set to hit the road in October to cover entertainment and sports events.

“The way they’re designed with Bluefin, Calrec consoles are flexible enough to do any kind of setup — both sports and entertainment,” says Jack Walsh, Trio Video’s owner-manager. “At music festivals, we’re usually covering from three to six stages, recording audio and video simultaneously, and distributing multiple webcasts to different outlets. The way the Calrec console is able to route signals makes it easy for us to do all that.”

Trio also counted operators’ familiarity with Calrec consoles, the consoles’ reliability, and Calrec’s high-quality service and support as key selling points. Calrec this year enhanced its Omega, which now features 240 channel-processing paths packaged as 72 stereo plus 96 mono channels, giving it the capacity to provide up to 36 full 5.1 surround channels. As with all Bluefin products, the Omega’s processing power is managed on a single DSP card with a second card included as a hot spare.

Trio, which is headquartered in Chicago, is expanding its fleet to meet the HD needs of clients including Comcast SportsNet Chicago, WGN-TV, and ESPN. Based on the body of a retired Trio analog truck being stripped to the skin and comprehensively re-outfitted for HD, Tempo is designed to travel cost-effectively without a B unit and to handle about 20 single-day shows a month.
