Venue News & Notes: Sports Complex Would Revitalize Sacramento, Report Says

A sports and entertainment complex in the downtown railyard — if done properly — would “catapult revitalization and significantly improve the face of downtown Sacramento,” according to a newly released report. The Downtown Sacramento Partnership and a consulting team from the Graduate School of Management at the University of California Davis studied the potential economic impacts of a proposed downtown arena. “The report suggests that a well-integrated complex with parallel investment in downtown’s core assets, including Old Sacramento, Downtown Plaza, JKL retail corridor, and the convention center, will maximize economic impact and strengthen the surrounding neighborhood,” the Downtown Sacramento Partnership said in a news release this week…

…The Detroit Red Wings and Detroit mayor Dave Bing agreed to extend talks aimed at a lease renewal that will keep the hockey club at Joe Louis Arena. The Detroit Free Press revealed that both sides have agreed to continue pursuing a new lease agreement for the arena, which the Red Wings have called home since the 1979-80 season. The current lease agreement between the two parties ends on Wednesday. Reports had surfaced throughout the previous season that the team was trying to decide whether or not to stay at Joe Louis Arena or, like the Pistons two decades earlier, build a new arena in the Detroit suburbs…

…Mississippi State athletic director Scott Stricklin says the university is working with a Kansas City architecture firm on a master plan for expanding Davis-Wade Stadium. Stricklin says Populous — formerly HOK Sports — is working with MSU on a 20-to-25 year plan that would have a 75,000-seat football stadium on campus in Starkville.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports that Stricklin told an alumni group in Greenwood this week that 25 years ago the stadium sat 30,000. He says now average attendance is about 55,000.
