World Cup 2010: German Broadcasters Stockpile EVSs in South Africa

Currently at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, which are currently in the midst of a joint production of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, have deployed a series of EVS instant tapeless solutions that provide access to the FIFA Media Asset Exchange (MAX) at the International Broadcast Center (IBC) in Johannesburg, as well as hours of custom-made content produced across South Africa with XT[2]-LSM systems in six OB units from Alfacam.

As media rights licensees (MRLs), ARD and ZDF are covering 55 live matches and taking up the largest space at the IBC with 2,500 square meters. The German public broadcasters are using EVS’ IPDirector suites to gain access to the FIFA MAX server, which is loaded with all of the match feeds, clips, highlights, city profiles, ENG material, and any other material that is needed by the MRLs to create their own packages. The IPDirector suites are also used to control content ingested on EVS’ XT[2] servers as well as to transfer content to and from Avid Media Composer stations for edits.

With the objective of breaking Germany’s viewing records, ARD and ZDF have also increased their capacity to produce content at the venues and the Nationalmannschaft’s base camp. The German broadcasters use up to 12 extra LDK 8000 cameras and set up a studio at each of the venues where the German team is playing. The coordinated operation is dependent on six OB units from Alfacam, where 18 HD XT[2]-LSM systems are used for ingest, Live Slow Motion operations, highlight packages as well as to feed on-air screens in the studio. Interviews and special reports are produced on XDCAM by ENG crews and transferred onto the XT[2] servers. ARD and ZDF also take the clean feed from the production switcher to add their own graphics and ISO feeds of the extra cameras, so that they can feature the Nationalmannschaft.
