RME Audio Converter Hits the Road for NCP

RME’s first audio converter with a redundant power supply, the ADI-6432R BNC, is now available stateside after having been successfully put to use during the World Cup football tournament in South Africa. The U.S. distributor, Synthax, says the system offers broadcasters ease of integration and fail-safe operation while offering 64 channels of I/O capability.

An additional 10 units are being delivered to New Century Productions (NCP) in Allentown, Pennsylvania for installation into their remote truck fleet for use at nationally televised sports, concerts, political conventions and other live and taped events.

Mike Mundt, Director of Engineering for NCP, turned to Rick Scott of Parsons Audio in Wellesley, MA during the design phase of one of the new NCP remote trucks in late 2009. At the time NCP was interested in the 64-channel RME ADI 6432 MADI-AES converter, but felt that it would be much more appropriate if it was configured as a single ended device with BNC ins and outs. That laid the groundwork for a new version of the device specifically designed to meet the needs and workflow of broadcasters and remote trucks.

“We are using the RME boxes as internal infrastructure to take AES audio from numerous VTR and EVS machines on one end of the truck and haul it to the audio mixing desk and the routing switcher on the far end,” says Mundt. “It eliminates a vast amount of coaxial cable as well as numerous distribution amps and patch panels and there is a huge savings in weight and bulk.”

The ADI-6432R BNC utilizes the AES-3id standard, which is an extension to the AES-3 standard (also known as AES/EBU). AES-3id carries the exact same AES data, but utilizes the broadcast standard 75 ohm unbalanced RG-59 cable (1V pp) with BNC connectors.

Each AES-3id connection carries 2 channels of digital audio up to 300 meters. The MADI signals also utilize RG-59, and can send 64 channels of audio a distance of 300 meters.
