NEP Trucks Loaded with Calrec Audio Consoles

NEP Broadcasting currently relies on a Calrec Alpha console with Bluefin for digital audio mixing in SS32, the primary remote truck for ESPN’s new 3D coverage. In addition NEP has installed a new 64-fader Sigma desk in the SS9 unit to replace an Alpha console.

Meanwhile, NEP will deploy a legacy Calrec Q2 analog console in SS31, its second new 3D truck. NEP and its divisions, Supershooters, New Century Productions, Denali, and NEP Visions, is Calrec’s single largest customer worldwide with Calrec desks mixing audio in more than three dozen trucks in North America and the United Kingdom.

“We go back to Calrec time and again for three reasons,” said George Hoover, CTO, NEP Supershooters. “First, we use several dozen different audio operators all over the country, and every one of them is familiar with the Calrec console, so there’s no learning curve. Second, the consoles are completely reliable, which is critical with the workout we give them week in and week out. Finally, as we and everybody else figure out 3D production, we need as much capability as possible, and that’s what the Calrec Alpha provides.”

NEP’s SS32 was utilized to provide baseball fans with the sights and sounds of the MLB All Star game on Fox. In addition to the latest 3D technology, the Calrec Alpha console on board provides 480 channel processing paths on just one DSP card, with full EQ and dynamics to all channels, packaged as 162 stereo and 156 mono channels, allowing up to 78 full 5.1 surround channels.

The Sigma console installed in NEP’s SS9 has 320 channel processing paths packaged as 108 stereo and 104 mono channels, allowing up to 52 surround sound channels. Also standard are eight mono, stereo, or 5.1 surround groups and four main program or 5.1 stereo surround outputs. All Calrec digital consoles rely on Bluefin high-density signal processing, FPGA chips-based technology.
