SENSIO Joins SVG To Help Advance 3D

The Sports Video Group is pleased to welcome SENSIO as its newest corporate sponsor. Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Montreal, the company develops and markets stereoscopic 3D digital compression, decompression, and display-formatting technologies designed to provide an advanced and immersive experience. Its systems are deployed on a global scale by content creators, games developers, broadcasters, specialty channels, and digital cinemas, allowing customers to generate substantial additional value-added revenue streams.

“SENSIO has joined Sports Video Group because we believe that our expertise in the areas of 3D technology and live 3D sporting events can add a dimension to the mission of SVG to advance the creation, production, and distribution of sports content,” says SENSIO President/CEO Nicholas Routhier.

Its flagship technology, SENSIO 3D, allows the high-quality distribution of 3D content through conventional 2D broadcast networks (cable, satellite, IP) and playback on any 3D display device, including HDTV, home-theater and digital cinema projectors, and gaming consoles. This technology and the SENSIO 3D Live Global Network of more than 700 cinemas in 33 countries have allowed SENSIO to make its mark by enabling broadcast of high-profile live 3D events in cinemas worldwide.

“As well as enabling an additional revenue stream, live 3D in cinemas also sows the seeds of audience appreciation for the medium,” says Routhier. “As home 3D technology becomes more widely available and affordable, sports-content creators and distributors will be able to tap into a community that is ready and waiting.”

During the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, SENSIO 3D technology enabled soccer fans all over the world to view 25 World Cup matches live in 3D and on the big screen. During the 30-day event, more than 4,500 screenings of the action took place across the globe in 475 cinemas in 33 countries. Besides providing encoding and decoding technology to ensure the highest-quality visual rendering, SENSIO supported marketing of these live 3D events through the SENSIO 3D Live Global Network.

“Through its patented 3D technology, SENSIO aims to place people at the heart of the action and allow them to experience the emotion of an event as if they were really there,” says Routhier. “Sporting events are a prime example of an experience that is heightened by being shared as a group and by the truly immersive perspective offered by SENSIO’s premium-quality 3D. Live 3D in cinemas of the SENSIO 3D Live Global Network brings both these aspects to audiences and is a particularly exciting opportunity for transcending national borders, such as with the soccer World Cup.”

SENSIO’s patented technology has been trusted by some of the biggest names in broadcasting for commercial live 3D sporting events. Among them:

  • January 2009: BCS Championship Game on Fox
  • February 2009: NBA All-Star Game on TNT
  • June 2009: French Open Tennis final on Orange and Telefonica
  • September 2009: NCAA football on ESPN
  • September 2009: Brazilian Soccer Cup on TV Globo
  • April 2010: RBS Six Nations rugby on Arqiva
