IBC 2010: ATEME Expands Titan Transcoding, Announces Partnership for Premium-Content Piracy Deterrence

ATEME S.A., France-based provider of video compression, has released Titan Live, adding support of IP-to-IP live transcoding to the company’s Titan platform, and announced a partnership with Civolution to provide protection for premium VOD content while streamlining operational workflows.

Titan Live is deployed in large-scale pay-TV/VOD applications in North America and Europe, says Product Marketing Manager Remi Beaudouin. The company’s core transcoding engine KFE (Kyrion File Encoder) is used to create files for Web and mobile delivery.

Says CTO Pierre Larbier, “Titan delivers efficiencies through density, reduced power consumption, simplified maintenance, and an intuitive workflow-management interface.”

On the IBC exhibit floor at Stand 1D70, ATEME is displaying two complete chains of its encoders and decoders, allowing side-by-side comparisons of broadcast contribution formats: MPEG-2 vs. MPEG-4, 4:2:0 vs. 4:2:2, or 8-bit vs. 10-bit.

On the distribution side, ATEME is highlighting its newly released AM2102 multichannel HD encoder and SR1000 dynamic rate allocator to be combined with the MC3000 multiplexer, enabling significant density gains for turnkey video headends. These additions to the ATEME suite of products can be efficiently managed through the company’s DataMiner-based open vendor-management system.

ATEME and Civolution
ATEME and Civolution, a provider of technology and solutions for identifying, managing, and monetizing media content, have integrated KFE with Civolution’s NexGuard pay-TV and online watermarking technology to allow content owners to confidently offer premium content, such as HD movies, in an early‐release window to pay-TV operators.

The pay-TV industry has recognized early-release HD as a promising source of new income. However, the content industry has been reluctant to grant early access because pirates could exploit the “analog hole” that exists after decryption and before the video is displayed. The Civolution-ATEME solution embeds a watermark during encoding and then adds a second, unique watermark when the content is accessed by each individual consumer, providing a deterrence against piracy.
