IBC 2010: In Midst of Busy September, Orad Unveils Enhancements

On Sept. 4, Orad’s virtual graphics could be found on seven networks simultaneously: CBS, ESPN, Sky Sports, Eurosport, and as first-down markers in football for three others. That was a first for the real-time–videographics company, which expects its record third-quarter growth to continue through a busy fall. The company showcased some of its latest products at IBC last week: MVP 3, update to the MVP graphical-enhancement tool; 3D Play, an event-based virtual-graphic–enhancement system; and the latest update to Playmaker, an eight-channel HD/SD slow-motion server.

“MVP 3 is out in its newest release, and it’s much faster and more feature-rich,” says Sales and Marketing VP Shaun Dail. “We made the graphics easier to import because almost everyone wants to use their own graphics, and that’s understandable: they work hard to build a brand. And we want them to be able to continue to use that brand. Previously, it was a bit of a challenge to get people’s assets in, but we’ve simplified that process.”

Other upgrades to MVP include additional features, colors, and shapes available through the telestrator, so that talent have a wider variety of tools to work with. The graphics are also easier to use, featured animations can be combined with logoed graphics, and the live-tracking features are more robust than ever.

3D Play, an event-based graphic system, offers users the ability to work off a rundown, timecode, or clock or manually.

“In sports, some amount of things will be fixed, but a bigger amount of things will not be fixed,” Dail says, “so this allows you to hop back and forth. Your pre-game and halftime shows can run automated, but, when you come back from halftime, you can go back to manual operation.”

In addition to a lower price, Playmaker now features an eight-channel server that is field-configurable in any configuration, so the operator can decide how best to utilize the server.

“We’ve also added the ability to use one eight-channel server and two controllers, so you maximize both rack and bench space,” Dail says. “For people who are interns or volunteers, it’s incredible how fast they can learn how to use it.”
