Teranex Simplifies 2D-to-3D Conversion

The Sports Video Group is pleased to welcome Teranex as its newest premier sponsor. Headquartered in Orlando, FL, and represented worldwide, Teranex’s award-winning products provide format and frame-rate conversion, video-noise reduction, film restoration, and pre/post-compression conditioning. Its SIMD array-processing technology delivers real-time processing with reprogrammable products, providing a future-proof solution for the broadcast industry’s changing needs.

Teranex is poised to lead the broadcasting transition from 2D to 3D. In November, the company launched Phase VIII software for the VC100 frame synchronizer and format-converter platform in the U.S. The software includes Teranex’s 2D-to-3D conversion application, VC1-2D-3D, as well as the VC1-3D-ENC encoder and VC1-3D-DEC decoder for 3D.

The VC1-2D-3D software allows broadcasters to convert live or archived 2D content into 3D in real time. It accepts a single 2D input on channel 1 and outputs stereoscopic outputs on channel 1 (left) and channel 2 (right). The application can perform all format conversions supported by the VC100. It has the ability to add digital-file logos to simulated 3D content, with horizontal, vertical, and depth position adjustments. Combining it with the VC1-3D-ENC application running on another unit, broadcasters can send 3D content over existing 1.485-Gbps broadcasting infrastructure.

The VC1-3D-ENC encoder accepts a stereoscopic input pair on channel 1 (left) and channel 2 (right) and outputs an encoded 3D video stream on channel 1. The VC1-3D-DEC decoder accepts a single encoded 3D video stream on channel 1 and outputs a stereoscopic pair on channel 1 (left) and channel 2 (right). Both applications support Top/Bottom (progressive formats only), Side by Side, and SENSIO Side by Side formats.

Earlier this month, SENSIO added its patented 3D frame-compatible stereoscopic compression technology to the VC1-3D-ENC and VC1-3D-DEC 3D encoding and decoding applications. The added capability enables delivery of 3D programming over an existing broadcasting infrastructure.

“Adding SENSIO 3D technology to our VC100′s 3D encoding and decoding applications ensures the highest fidelity to the original 3D image all the way down the distribution line,” says Teranex GM Mike Poirier. “We wanted to offer our customers a professional-grade proven solution to deliver a truly immersive 3D experience to the home. Teranex’s VC100 dual-channel architecture is uniquely suited to 3D, and combining our patented technology with SENSIO’s enables our customers to broadcast premium-quality 3D content over an existing 1.485-Gbps infrastructure.”
