Crown Castle Helps Venues Improve Fans’ Wireless Experience

The Sports Video Group is pleased to welcome Crown Castle as a corporate sponsor. Founded in 1994, Crown Castle is one of the largest independent owners and operators of shared wireless infrastructure in the U.S. Crown Castle owns, operates, builds, and leases towers, rooftops, and Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) in prime markets for wireless communications. With a nationwide presence, Crown Castle has the local resources to provide comprehensive site deployment services — including site acquisition, engineering, zoning and permitting, and construction — all designed to provide flexible solutions for customers.

“Fans attending major sporting events want to share their experience and stay connected with friends and family via their mobile cellular devices by sharing calls, texts, and photos with friends and family across the country,” says the company’s COO Jim Young. “For venues looking to provide wireless coverage on game day or during any major event they host, a distributed antenna systems (DAS) network provides the optimal wireless infrastructure solution.  Crown Castle is a pioneer in the design, deployment and monitoring of neutral host DAS networks.”

Crown Castle offers significant wireless communications coverage to 92 of the top 100 US markets and to substantially all of the Australian population. Crown Castle owns, operates and manages over 22,000 and approximately 1,600 wireless communication sites in the US and Australia, respectively.

“In addition, as a leading provider of shared wireless infrastructure in the US, Crown Castle has long term relationships with all major wireless carriers.  We have the expertise to design and deploy these systems, and we work directly with the carriers to lease capacity on the system, enabling the venue owner to enjoy incremental revenue without the burden of coordinating deployment, installation, and maintenance of the system.   More importantly the venue can deliver one of their primary objectives, ensuring a superb wireless experience for fans at their venue before, during, and after an event.”

One of Crown Castle’s subsidiaries has deployed an outdoor distributed antenna system to facilitate wireless communications services at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. The distributed antenna system is a network of antennas connected by fiber to a communications hub designed to facilitate wireless communications services for multiple operators. Crown Castle has also received approval from Stanford to add in-building antenna nodes to support various other locations on the university campus.

Stanford has more than 15,000 students, nearly 2,000 faculty members and approximately 150,000 visitors annually. The distributed antenna system deployed at Stanford utilizes strategically placed rooftop antennas, pole mounted antennas, and a stealth scoreboard pole at the 50,000-seat Stanford Stadium. The system currently facilitates wireless coverage for three major wireless communication operators and another operator is in the process of deploying. The current system has capacity for a fifth operator.
