SVG Year in Review: July

July continued to show the momentum in 3D sports as Major League Baseball contests stepped to the fore. First, YES Network and Fox Sports Northwest brought America’s game in 3D to viewers of their networks, and in doing so paved the road for further 3D transmission. Later that week ESPN and Fox Sports brought 3D to the Major League Baseball All Star Game festivities in Anaheim, delivering both the Home Run Derby and All Star Game in 3D to DirecTV viewers. The production produced major technological developments – in terms of 3D camera rigs, audio for 3D, and 3D transmission. Other 3D highlights in July included the NASCAR on Turner and ESPN’s X Games. In HD news one of the world’s grandest sporting events, the British Open, made the leap to sharper resolution, as ESPN gave viewers a true sense of what it is like to walk the old course at St. Andrews. However, the legendary course’s howling winds made for a long weekend for the ESPN team.

Lastly, PGA Tour Entertainment kindly opened their doors to SVG and its members for the 2010 Sports Asset Management Summit. The event was highlighted by a tour of the facility as well as conference sessions that dove into topics like content protection, long-term storage technologies, ingest and logging, IT, and more. In addition, attendees were offered an inside look at the state-of-the-art EVS system in South Africa for 2010 FIFA World Cup as well as NASCAR Media Group’s new facility.
