Venue News: Aloha Stadium Future in Flux

The future of Aloha Stadium has long been a hot topic, but the heat was turned up a notch during Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s first State of the State Address when he recommended to stop spending any more money to fix the aging facility. Aloha Stadium in Honolulu will take center stage Sunday with the 2011 Pro Bowl. What happens after that is truly up in the air. “This is a perfect time to take a look at this issue once again and make a decision once and for all whether we’re going to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into an aging facility or whether we’re going to consider building a new facility,” said State Rep. The auction will feature Magic memorabilia, such as game jerseys from Bo Outlaw and Patrick Ewing, a dry-erase board with stats from the 2010 NBA Playoffs, and lockers and carpet from the locker room…

… A major benefactor to the University of Connecticut wants the school to return $3 million in donations and remove his family name from its football complex because he says he was shut out of discussions about the selection of a new football coach. Robert Burton, CEO of Greenwich, CT.-based Burton Capital Management, said in a Jan. 19 letter to UConn Athletic Director Jeff Hathaway that his opinions were ignored and he did not support the way Paul Pasqualoni was selected as coach.
