All Mobile Video’s Epic 3D Truck Relies on Fujifilm Lenses

All Mobile Video (AMV) recently furnished its Epic 3D mobile production unit with lenses from FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division for use on Sony HDC1500 Series cameras and Sony HDC-P1 cameras on 3ality Digital 3D stereoscopic rigs. The Epic 3D features six Fujinon HA23x7.6BERM HD Premier Series ENG-Style telephoto lenses and 12 Fujinon HAs18x7.6BRM Premier Series HD ENG-Style telephoto lenses. Each 3D rig on the truck includes two lenses for stereoscopic 3D production. There are six 3ality Digital 3flex 3D camera rigs on the Epic 3D truck – four TS-2 Studio Beamsplitter rigs and two TS-4 Side-by-Side rigs.

“[The 3D engineers] were ecstatic with how well the lenses lined up with each other,” said Lee Blanco, director of engineering at AMV. “Our customers who use the lenses regularly for 3D production have gone out of their way to tell us, ‘Your Fujinon lenses are great!’”

Blanco said that zooming typically presents challenges in 3D production. Lenses that are to be used in tandem for 3D productions must share the same focal length – and during shooting, they must also match zoom and focus position. “The closer the lenses are to each other in their zooming, the fewer corrections you have to make,” explains Blanco. “The fewer corrections you have to make, the less time you have to spend setting that up.”

3ality Digital’s 3flex camera systems manual alignment corrects mechanical and optical imperfections.  The systems feature semi-automatic setup and alignment.  “In the world of 3D, that’s huge because that reduces the lengthy and complicated set-up procedures we go through on site,” says Blanco.

Recently, Chelsea Studios handled the 3D production of Animal Planet’s “Puppy Bowl,” shot using Epic 3D’s camera rigs. Epic 3D was on site for a Direct TV music show that was shot on five 3D rigs. All Mobile Video also produced a single-camera 3D demo for the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting in New York City.
