NAB Perspectives: Telecast’s Hurwitz Talks Triax vs. SMPTE

Jim Hurwitz, director of product management and marketing for Telecast Fiber, has been watching a fight brew in the sport industry between those who are resisting moving to optical cabling and those who are standing by triax.

“The fight between the triax and SMPTE cable users has not yet been solved,” Hurwitz says. “In the stadium, some of them provide fiber and some of them don’t, so we have to be able to provide tools for both of them.”

To that end, Hurwitz has seen more triax cameras being developed, so Telecast is working on the development of its Cobra Fiber Optic Triax Extender for digital triax.

“That’s exclusively for the sports business,” Hurwitz says.

Telecast has two big focuses in the sports industry – the traditional mobile production truck business and the game-day entertainment groups. Telecast is working to support the latter group with cost-effective tools to help advance game-day entertainment operations.

In the college market, Telecast is working with numerous campuses to help build a single control room that can cost-effectively produce shows from any other venue on campus.

“Being able to access and control multiple venues from a single control room is hugely cost-effective for college campuses,” Hurwitz says. “That’s a big trend that we’re seeing and it is one of our most important contributions.”
