Venue News: Sacramento Holds Onto Kings for One More Season

Co-owner Joe Maloof says the Kings will remain in Sacramento for at least one more season to give Mayor Kevin Johnson a chance to follow through on his promise for a new arena. The team had been considering a move to Anaheim, CA. Last week, Sacramento’s corporate community handed NBA representatives deposits on more than $10 million in sponsorship pledges for the Kings to stay at least another year. The Maloofs explored relocation because of several failed efforts to build a new arena in Sacramento…

…The state Senate author of the Minnesota Vikings’ stadium bill remains optimistic that the Legislature can find a way to finance a stadium even though time is running out on the session. Sen. Julie Rosen (R-Fairmont) said legislators are discussing the proposal and there is a good chance the bill will start receiving committee hearings in the coming days.

“Too hot, and the restrooms aren’t clean” was a complaint from too many fans after The Players Championship moved from March to May in 2007. With a little ingenuity and $250,000 for upgrades, those issues are being addressed at TPC Sawgrass in Point Verde, FL. The upgrades are part of a series of initiatives by Executive Director Matt Rapp to elevate the tournament — in terms of attendance, revenue, prestige, and its impact on the region.

Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Richie Garcia says the island of Boracay may be tapped to host some of the events of the 2013 Asian Centennial Games. Garcia made a short visit to the resort island off the northwest tip of Panay Island in Western Visayas, a day after the Philippine Olympic Committee formed a study group tasked with identifying the venues that will be used when the country plays host to the 100th-year celebration of the Asian Games.

Officials canceled the remainder of the Port Huron (MI) Predators’ inaugural Continental Indoor Football League season Thursday night, just two days before the Predators were to face the Indianapolis Enforcers Saturday at McMorran Arena in Port Huron. The Predators had three games remaining on their regular-season schedule. The team’s abrupt folding is a result of the bizarre departure of owner Rachael Brusate and means that McMorran Arena will once again be on the search for new tenants.
