In The UK, You Can't Escape The Fee, Even If You Have No TV

The UK’s Mail Online reports that wrapping the television in kitchen foil is one of the more bizarre ways people have tried – and failed – to avoid the TV licence detector van. The excuses for not paying up are equally odd. Everything from the television being watched only by the dog to it being used only to provide warmth for the family cat.

But perhaps the most baffling explanation, and one that always fails to be understood by TV Licensing, is revealing that you do not own a television.

Three per cent of the 30 million households in Britain do not have one, according to the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board. This compares with the five per cent that watch television but illegally evade the £145.50 annual colour licence fee.
