NASCAR.com Expands TrackPass RaceView Access

As Brad Keselowski took the checkered flag in his improbable victory at Lucas Oil Raceway last weekend, fans of the NASCAR Nationwide Series logging onto NASCAR.com were treated to a live virtual experience previously available only for the Sprint Cup Series. This season, for the first time, NASCAR.com’s TrackPass RaceView is covering three NASCAR Nationwide Series races: in addition to last Saturday’s Kroger 200 at Lucas Oil Raceway, fans can access the online application for the Nationwide Series races at Watkins Glen International on Aug. 13 and Richmond International Raceway on Sept. 9.

“This is a very exciting season for the NASCAR Nationwide Series, and, by offering TrackPass RaceView for these three marquee races, fans can put themselves on track with their favorite drivers for the first time,” says Justin Williams, senior director of business operations for NASCAR.com. “We are excited to be able to work with our partners at NASCAR and Nationwide to use one of our signature products to continue to grow and improve the fans’ digital NASCAR experience.”

TrackPass RaceView complements the race telecast by providing fans with access to virtual video from the full field of 43 drivers. Using GPS coordinates and radio telemetry installed in the track, transmitters placed in each car broadcast data to a central control unit. A 3D video engine transforms this data into virtual video, in-car audio, position tracker, live telemetry, and real-time race statistics for each driver. Users can see the leaderboard as if they were at the race or watching on television while accessing interactive information unavailable from the telecast alone.

“You’re able to listen to the scanners as they’re going off,” explains Williams. “The telemetry data that’s coming off each driver is going to tell you things like fastest lap. You can also see how the driver’s applying brake and throttle at that same time and exactly what speed that driver’s going at that particular moment.”

TrackPass RaceView provides six virtual camera angles on each driver: Automatic, Front, Back, Side, Top, and Pit Road. The online application supports all current editions of Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer running Adobe Flash Player. Unlike RaceBuddy, NASCAR.com’s online companion product that streams live race action to computers, RaceView is designed to enhance fans’ viewing experience of the telecast by enabling them to lock in on their favorite driver, via laptop or desktop, throughout the race.

“TV has done a wonderful job keeping up and broadcasting all of the great action that’s happening on track, but it just can’t do everything,” says Williams. “You just can’t keep up with all the action that fans want at any given point. You only have so many cameras and only so much time to spend with each driver.”

Fans can access a free trial of TrackPass RaceView at www.nascar.com/raceview; monthly and annual plans are available.
